Interior Painting Tips: What Not to Do in a Small Room

So you’ve decided to update your small room. Whether it’s a half bath, an office, or perhaps a small bedroom, it can be difficult to choose paint colors for such a room. We know you’re excited to see some updates in your Virginia home, but before painting day arrives, there are a few things to consider to be sure you’ve chosen the right paint for your room. Let our team at Gemini Wallcovering & Renovations, Inc. put your mind at ease with these three caveats to watch out for when choosing interior paint.

Dark Colors

When you’re painting a small room, you generally don’t want to use dark colors. Dark colors seem closer than they actually are, so unless you want your room to feel dark, tiny, and claustrophobic, don’t opt for dark paint. On the contrary, use light, neutral colors, such as beige, gray, or cream, or gentle shades of blue or green.

Intense Colors

Bright or intense colors have the same effect as dark colors: they make the walls feel closer. Therefore, avoid bright colors like red, electric blue, and orange in small rooms. Instead, focus on colors that are gentle on the eyes. They do not have to be boring colors, but they should be those that tend to fade back rather than jump out at you.

Contrasting Colors

Contrast pops out, drawing attention to specific features. In bigger rooms, sharp contrasts provide visual interest and definition to the space. However, striking contrasts in a small room will make the walls feel closer to you and the room feel even smaller that it actually is. Accent walls or boldly-colored trim can have this “closing-in” effect. In a small room, consider painting your trim the same color as the walls, or a gentle white. Also, you can paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, but a few shades lighter. That will provide a beautiful look to the ceiling, and avoid making it feel like the lid of a box.
